Room 8 News

Sept. 9, 2016

We have had 7 great days of school and the children are learning the routines and expectations of first grade!

During Word Work time the children reviewed how to form their upper and lower case letters.  They have also reviewed the letter sounds for a, b, c, f, t, i and m.  They have learned the red words the, I and can.   Red Words are sight words that the children should be able to read as well as spell independently.

In math the children practiced number line activities, counting up to 50 by ones and they learned two games, the Penny Dice Game and the Number Squeeze game.  (Penny Dice is played with 20 pennies and one die.  Each player rolls the die and takes the amount of pennies indicated on the die.  The person with the most is the winner.  Number Squeeze is played with a number line.  The caller thinks of a number between 1 and 20.  The player with the number line puts chips on 1 and 20.  The player could ask “is the number _7”?   Depending on what number the caller is thinking of, the caller might respond with “it is higher than  7”.  The player then moves the chip that was on 1 to 7.  Each guess squeezes the number that the caller is thinking of).

Children are spending time each day reading independently or browsing at leveled books.  These books as well as a poetry folder are kept in their browsing box.
Next week during Reader’s Workshop we will focus on the importance of using reading strategies to help readers sound out words and understand the meaning of the text.  Some of those strategies are…. using picture clues, looking at the first letter of a word, skipping the word and reading on and then going back and rereading, looking for word chunks that the reader might know or make a good guess.

During Writing Workshop the children are choosing their own topics and creating pieces of writing.  The mini lessons have focused on how to choose a topic, using an upper case I, using spaces between words and “adding on” to a piece of writing.  They love to share their writing at the end of the workshop!
During the past week we have been focusing on All About Me activities.  Next week we will focus on Families.

We continue to focus daily on our school expectations, Be Safe, Be Respectful, Be Ready To Learn.   We talk about what the expectations look like in different school settings.

Just a reminder, if you haven’t sent in an extra set of clothes to be kept at school, it would be really helpful if you could.  We sometimes have occasions (food spills, bathroom accidents or playground puddles etc.)  that may require dry clothes!   Thank you!
